This is who we are...
Parrot Rescue, Inc. functions solely on contributions and the services of volunteers.  We can spend hours tracking lost birds, retrieving found birds and rescuing birds from sometimes horrifying situations.  We arrange for the transportation of found, rescued and surrendered birds, create posters, place advertisements and follow up on lost and found ads.
As volunteers, we must often take time from our jobs or cancel special plans to help with emergencies and are not paid for our services.
Parrot Rescue, Inc. is always in need of donations.  Funds, cages, seed and pellets, perches carriers, play gyms, food/water dishes and bird toys are desperately needed to help provide rescued birds with food, medical care and suitable housing.

This is what we do...
LOST BIRDS
Parrot Rescue, Inc. is contacted almost daily about a lost, found, sighted or unwanted pet bird.  Skittish or unreachable birds may be coaxed down with food, toys or "decoy" birds.
Parrot Rescue, Inc. will list found birds in advertisements; advertisements are placed in local newspapers and will network with other organizations and bird clubs; this information exchange can help in reuniting lost birds with their owners.  Listings of missing birds are kept on file so they can be cross-matched with found bird ads, postings and telephone inquiries.
Parrot Rescue, Inc.'s volunteers advise owners on ways to recover a lost pet.  Displaying and distributing "Lost Bird" flyers can be quite effective and volunteers may assist in this task if possible.
Parrot Rescue Inc.'s volunteers do everything possible to reunite lost birds with their owners.  We provide these rescue services free of charge, however, we are volunteers with full-time jobs and will do our best to return calls in a timely fashion..

FOUND BIRDS
When Parrot Rescue is contacted about a found bird, volunteers often confer with the caller to determine a plan of action.   Often, the finder wishes to surrender the bird to Parrot Rescue.   The bird is then picked up by a volunteer and immediately taken to an avian veterinarian where it is examined and if necessary, treated.
When determined healthy, the bird is placed in a foster home.  A volunteer member of Parrot Rescue will house the bird up to 21 days until its owner is located or a permanent new home is found.  While in foster care, the rescued bird receives excellent care and food along with toys and lots of love.
Advertisements are placed in local newspapers and we will network with other organizations and bird clubs in an effort to locate the bird's owner.  If, after four weeks, its owner has not been located, the bird is placed in Parrot Rescue's Adoption Placement Program.  Strict adoption requirements are in place to assure that birds are placed in good homes where they will receive the best care.  Home visits by Rescue personnel are required.
We strongly encourage membership in educational organizations such as the Long Island Parrot Society of NY, Inc.  For more information about LIPS, please call their Parrot Phone at (631) 957-1100 or visit www.liparrots.org

OFFERING A PET BIRD FOR ADOPTION
Sometimes illness, relocation, time constraints, or lifestyle changes result in the painful realization that a pet bird must be placed in a new home.  Parrot Rescue, Inc. is often called upon to provide assistance in such situations.
Parrot Rescue, Inc. offers the following options to bird owners seeking new homes for their pets:

WB01187_.GIF (400 bytes)

The bird may be surrendered to Parrot Rescue, Inc.  If it is deemed an emergency, volunteers will make arrangements to have the bird picked up or delivered.  The bird will then be placed with a foster family until it is adopted.
WB01187_.GIF (400 bytes) Donations are always needed to cover the cost of supplies of birds in rescue, and their veterinary care.
WB01187_.GIF (400 bytes) We do NOT sell birds nor do we adopt them out to breeders.
WB01187_.GIF (400 bytes) We are located in Suffolk County, Long Island, NY.  At this time, we offer birds for adoption within a 50 mile radius only.   Those who are outside of this area, please contact your local bird club for adoptions and/or rescues in your area.

These services are open to all.  While we strongly recommend membership in a local club, it is not required.  Please contact us for further information at:
